The SEMS capital campaign is an entirely separate form of support for the organization above and beyond the general subscription membership. Those individuals interested in donating to the capital campaign will be directly supporting the purchase of equipment, vehicles, and our future building expansion. The current station on 8 Maple Avenue was completed over twenty years ago. Most of the funding for the building came from in-kind donations by local contractors along with the supply and purchase of materials from a host of generous individuals. When the station was dedicated in 1991 the department barely ran 600 calls for service a year. Culturally, Smithsburg was still very much a sleepy community and volunteers were easily able to handle the volume without the assistance of career staff. Today, both the community and the profession have drastically changed. SEMS now deploys on approximately 1370 calls per year utilizing a combination of volunteer and career staff. In addition to the basic life support services provided in the early 90's, paramedics now regularly respond to provide critical, life saving interventions to the citizens and visitors of Smithsburg. SEMS is in the early stages of a building expansion. The membership and staff have greatly outgrown the existing building and the plan is to add room for the increase in volunteers and career staff that now call the building home on a daily basis.
