Ride Along

If you would like to learn more about EMS, we invite you to participate in a ride-along day at Smithsburg EMS. You will be able to observe paramedics and EMT’s in action, learn about the equipment on the ambulance, and discover what daily life is like inside an EMS station.

Before being able to ride an ambulance, you will be given a safety briefing, a tour and overview of the vehicle and equipment.  You will also be asked to complete some paperwork.  To participate in a ride-along, you must be at least 16 years old.  Those under age 18 must have a parent or guardian’s signed permission.

Please complete the form to the right.  A member of Smithsburg EMS will contact you to set up a date and time and will give you additional details, such as basic rules and appropriate attire, via email.

    Our Story

SEMS was formed in 1980 to address a need for professional EMS services in the Smithsburg area. Originally operated solely by volunteers out of the fire department, SEMS grew to fit the needs of our growing population. In 1989 several founding members embarked on an ambitious journey: to build a station devoted to emergency services for the sick and injured. The station was dedicated on November 18, 1990. Now volunteers and career paramedics answer approximately 1200 calls for service to the citizens and visitors of Smithsburg every year.
