Equipment & Fleet

Paramedic Chase/Intercept

Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services recently acquired two new Chevrolet Suburban chase vehicles. Custom-made containers in the rear of the vehicles maintain temperature control of medications, a therapeutic hypothermia cooler, and equipment for advanced life support. Additionally, SEMS recently added a 2013 Ford Interceptor Utility. All of our vehicles are professionally upfitted to meet the highest industry standards by Priority Install of Gaithersburg, MD.

Our Ambulances

SEMS operates three advanced life support (ALS) ambulances. All of our ambulances were manufactured by Horton Emergency Vehicles of Columbus, OH. Initially founded in 1968, Horton is the industry leader in the fabrication of ambulances. SEMS has a 2015 International, a 2006 Ford E-450, and a 2001 Freightliner.

Tools of the Trade

All of Smithsburg paramedics have a thorough knowledge of many technologies, prescriptions, and life saving devices, because they must be prepared for any crisis. Much of our equipment is designed to perform with an extraordinarily low rate of failure and to meet the strictest specifications available. Our Story

SEMS was formed in 1980 to address a need for professional EMS services in the Smithsburg area. Originally operated solely by volunteers out of the fire department, SEMS grew to fit the needs of our growing population. In 1989 several founding members embarked on an ambitious journey: to build a station devoted to emergency services for the sick and injured. The station was dedicated on November 18, 1990. Now volunteers and career paramedics answer approximately 1200 calls for service to the citizens and visitors of Smithsburg every year.
